AIM 6.8.1.5 Beta

AIM 6.8 version includes the new Real-Time IM feature. Please note: To test this feature, you will need to IM with users who are also using AIM 6.8 - so recruit your buddies today!

What is Real-Time IM?Real-Time IM lets you and your buddy see what the other person is typing in real-time, as it is being typed, right in your IM window. It is like seeing a preview of an IM. Normally, you can’t read a message from your buddy until it is sent and appears in the IM window. But with Real-Time IM, you see each letter your buddy is typing in the IM window even before it is sent to you.How does it work?

Real-Time IM directly connects your PC to your buddy’s PC to send and receive information in real-time. This is also called Direct IM connection. AIM recommends that you only accept Direct IM connections from buddies you know.

How do I use it?

To invite a buddy to participate in Real-Time IM, click the Actions menu at the top of the IM window, or at the bottom of the Buddy List® window, and then select Real-Time IM. You may also press Ctrl+R on your keyboard to initiate Real-Time IM. Once your buddy accepts the invitation, both of you can begin to send and receive IMs in real-time.

Once your buddy starts typing, the IM they are typing is highlighted in orange.

When the IM is sent, the highlight will disappear, and the IM will appear as normal.

To turn off Real-Time IM, uncheck Real-Time IM from the Actions menu, and close the IM window, or simply press Ctrl+R on your keyboard. A notification in the IM window will appear stating that the session has ended.

What do I need to use RTIM?

You and your buddy need to be using AIM 6.8 or higher to use Real-Time IM. Unfortunately, Real-Time IM does not yet work with older AIM clients, iChat®, or AIM® for Mac®.

How are Real-Time IMs logged?

Real-Time IMs are logged only after they have been sent. They are not logged as they’re being typed.

Known Issues with this beta client:

- After being signed on for a while, the Windows ‘Default Beep’ sound plays instead of the appropriate buddy sound
- Some buddies do not receive a notification when ejected from a voice chat
- Starting a new EIM session after selecting “End current session” is not always successful
- Trying to sign on with a mac.com SN using a saved password upgraded from AIM 5.9 gives ‘Connection failed’ error message
- If an AIM 6.x user sends a Talk invitation to a user that is signed on to both AIM 5.9 and AIM 6.x with the same Screen Name, it is only received by the AIM 6.x client
- When sending a talk invitation to users who are logged on in two locations (especially if one is an older AIM client), the invitations may not be received by all instances of the screenname
- Intermittent crash when closing IM window with certain immersive wallpapers
- Buddy List ‘Find’ feature does not highlight matching string in found buddy names if the spacing in the buddy’s Screen Name does not match what was typed in the Find/search/filter field
- “Find” in Buddy List will not detect all instances of the screen name if the spacing does not match exactly
- Addressing a New IM window to an online user that you have deleted from your Buddy List during the same session, may display ‘[recipient] is offline’
- Certain animated GIFs have redraw problems in preview/thumbnail area at bottom of Pictures window in Instant Images session
- While in Away state, toggling from an IM tab to a chat tab in narrow grouped IM window cuts off Away Status tab label
- Audio/Video connections over proxy are not fully supported
